Venus Atmospheric Dynamics at Two Altitudes: Akatsuki and Venus Express Cloud Tracking, Ground-Based Doppler Observations and Comparison with Modelling

چکیده
We present new results of our studies zonal and meridional winds in both hemispheres Venus, using ground- space-based coordinated observations. The obtained from telescope observations were retrieved with a Doppler velocimetry method. wind velocities space used an improved cloud-tracked technique based on the phase correlation between images. evidence that altitude level sensed by method is approximately four kilometres higher (~4 km) than ground-tracked (using 380 or 365 nm). Since we often take advantage ground simultaneously, this difference will be very relevant order to estimate vertical shear at related heights future observation campaigns. also explored previous campaign Akatsuki its Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) 283 nm filters, which showed about 10–15 ms−1, as case comparison cloudtracked winds. results’ strongly suggested filter’s images sensing same atmospheric observational compared ground-to-thermosphere 3D model developed Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique (IPSL-Venus General Circulation Model (VGCM)) AFES-Venus (GCM), several pressure levels (and heights). analysis following: (1) additional confirmation coherence complementarity provided these techniques spatial temporal time scales two methods; (2) noticed following different Akatsuki/UVI filters (283 nm) average ± 5 suggest may SO2 fluctuations particular conditions observing window; (3) indicating that, context observations, visible methods (highly self-consistent) seem sense speeds closer within range UVI filter (again, observations); (4) modelling predicted profiles suggests layers atmosphere Venus referred Point 3 differ km 2 regarding

Venus Cloud Properties from Venus Express VIRTIS Observations
Near-infrared spectra from the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on Venus Express have been used to investigate the vertical structure and global distribution of cloud properties on Venus. The spectral range covered by VIRTIS is sensitive on the nightside to absorption by the lower and middle cloud layers, which are back-lit by radiation from the lower atmosphere and su...
متن کاملMean winds at the cloud top of Venus obtained from two-wavelength UV imaging by Akatsuki
Venus is covered with thick clouds. Ultraviolet (UV) images at 0.3–0.4 microns show detailed cloud features at the cloud‐top level at about 70 km, which are created by an unknown UV‐absorbing substance. Images acquired in this wavelength range have traditionally been used to measure winds at the cloud top. In this study, we report low‐lati‐ tude winds obtained from the images taken by the UV im...
متن کاملMESSENGER and Venus Express observations of the solar wind interaction with Venus
[1] At 23:08 UTC on 5 June 2007 the MESSENGER spacecraft reached its closest approach altitude of 338 km during its final flyby of Venus en route to its 2011 orbit insertion at Mercury. The availability of the simultaneous Venus Express solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field measurements provides a rare opportunity to examine the influence of upstream conditions on this planet’s solar win...
متن کاملTropospheric carbon monoxide concentrations and variability on Venus from Venus Express/VIRTIS-M observations
[1] We present nightside observations of tropospheric carbon monoxide in the southern hemisphere near the 35 km height level, the first from Venus Express/Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS)-M-IR. VIRTIS-M data from 2.18 to 2.50 mm, with a spectral resolution of 10 nm, were used in the analysis. Spectra were binned, with widths ranging from 5 to 30 spatial pixels, to incr...
